The Basics of Easy Piano Music Reading

While piano playing can be complex, learning it can be easy as pie. However, before you begin easy piano lessons, you should understand some basic components for reading music. This crucial information will give you head start even before your first lesson, and help to make your lessons more enjoyable.

Meet the Staff
Sometimes a staff does not include people who work in a particular organization. In the world of easy piano terms, the Staff includes a group of five horizontal lines. Between each pair of lines you can see blank spaces. Notes can appear on or between the horizontal lines.

To the far-left of each Staff, you can see one of two “clefs.” An easy piano symbol, the Clef indicates the rage of sounds that the piano player should play. The “Treble Clef” represents a higher range of notes. This easy piano Clef looks like a fancy number “6” with a slanted letter “J” running through it. Meanwhile, the “Bass Clef” indicates a range of notes that is lower. It resembles a sketch of an ear, with a colon (the punctuation mark, not the organ) positioned to the right of the “ear.”

Reading a book without punctuation would make you want to pull your hair out, right? Likewise, the “Measure” is another easy piano component in written music. A Measure consists of vertical lines along the Staff, which break it up into sections. This makes reading and playing music much easier.

Don`t Miss the Beat (or Pitch and Duration)
Then there is the easy piano “Time Signature.” That tells you about the “Beat” to use until it changes. The Time Signature consists of one number atop another number. The top member shows how many Beats each Measure includes. Meanwhile, the bottom number indicates the duration of each Beat. A bottom number of “8” indicates an easy piano Eighth Note, a “4” indicates a Quarter Note, and so on.

Speaking of Notes, you should be aware of two important easy piano characteristics of them. The “Pitch” is the Note`s place on the Staff, and informs you about how the Note will sound. Meanwhile, the “Duration” is the shape of a Note, and informs you about how long you must play the Note.

The Notable Notes
Here are the basic types of Notes, which you can see on a Staff. The Whole Note looks like a circle. Meanwhile, the Half Note has half the value of a Whole Note, and looks like a Whole Note with a vertical line attached above the right perimeter of the circle. Next, the Quarter Note looks like a Half Note, with the circle part filled in. Played for half the duration of a Quarter Note, the Eighth Note looks like an easy piano Quarter Note, with a squiggly line at the top of the vertical line. Meanwhile, the Sixteenth Note resembles like an Eighth Note, except it has two squiggly lines.
