How to Position a Piano Bench Before Your Keyboard Lesson
We our creatures of habit. One of the best habits you should have when playing the piano, is to seat yourself comfortably before playing your first note. The bench should be at the right height and at the proper distance from the piano, prior to beginning your keyboard lesson.
A crucial issue you should handle before you begin a keyboard lesson is the height of the bench. After making adjustments to the bench, if you are seated on the floor or your head is teaching the ceiling then further bench adjustments are required.
On the other hand, you are at an ideal bench height when your elbow and upper arm drop without restraint from the corresponding shoulder. Also, when your forearm and hand are formed “naturally,” the forearm should be parallel to the room`s floor. “Naturally” refers to their position that the hand and the forearm have when your hand is suspended at the side. After achieving this position, you are ready to begin your keyboard lesson.
Another important issue regarding the location of your bench before your keyboard lesson is the distance from the piano. An ideal distance is one in which your elbows sit a little in front of your “center line.” The “center line” is located where your hands are atop the keyboard, in a neutral position. In other words, they should not be directly in front of your body or at either extreme of the keyboard.
It is important to realize that you will not necessarily maintain this relaxed position during an entire practice session or keyboard lesson. However, this starting position will prepare you for whenever notes you need to play.
When in this starting position, verify that your arm and wrist are positioned correctly. This will help you to be better prepared for your keyboard lesson. The upper arm should feel relaxed and not too rigid or weighty. Neither should it be too high or too forward.
Next, the forearm and wrist should be relaxed (but not too relaxed), before you begin you keyboard lesson. They should resemble their form when they are suspended at the side, yet ready to rock and roll. Finally, the wrist should be in line with the hand and forearm, neither raised too high nor dropped too low.
When seated on the bench, you should sit at roughly the middle of the seat. Before you begin your keyboard lesson, verify that your hip joint has freedom of movement. To achieve this goal, ensure that your thigh is not positioned too far back on the bench.
When you need to add height to your bench before you start your keyboard lesson, you have a few options. If you have an adjustable bench, then simply adjust it. Otherwise you can add height to the top of the bench, or add height to the floor.
Before you begin your keyboard lesson, prepare the height and distance of your bench. Another pre-playing method is to take piano lessons at Rocket Piano. It will definitely take your piano playing to new heights!
