Learn Piano Notes Before Taking Keyboard Lessons

Learning should begin before you start keyboard lessons. This is important, to ensure that you later maximize the effectiveness of the lessons themselves. While you do not necessarily need a PhD degree in music, learn how to read music before taking keyboard lessons.

Black and White
Before you learn to read music and start your keyboard lessons, it is important to understand the different keys on the keyboard. A piano keyboard consists of sets of seven white keys and five black keys. However, within this set is a sub-set of three white keys and two black keys; and four white keys and three black keys. These sets of notes increase from those that are lower in pitch, to those that are higher in pitch.

Before you start your keyboard lessons, learn the names of the keys. Each group of seven white keys includes corresponding letters of the alphabet: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. However, reading music will be mind-boggling if you assume that the keys are named in alphabetical order. From left to right, groups of white keys actually are as follows: C, D, E, F, G, A, and B.

Okay, that brings us to the black keys. These keys are named EITHER as being a half step above a white key or below a different white key. For example, the black key to the right of the D key has the name D sharp (D#). However, an important fact related to keyboard lessons is that the same letter also has the name E flat (Eb). That`s because it`s also half a step below (to the left) of the E white key.

An interesting matter involving keyboard lessons is that that in every group of seven keys, two pairs of white keys exist without black keys in between them. Those are the sets of the C and B keys, and the F and E keys. Don`t panic! We can simply say that the “flat” or “sharp” of those keys are actually the adjacent white key. For instance, the flat of the C key is the B key, and the sharp of the B key is the C key.

Okay, now let`s put theory into practice, before you start your keyboard lessons. Have a friend or family member call out a particular key on the keyboard (including sharps and flats), and then try to find the key as quickly as you can.


Cows, Ducks, and Fudge
When reading notes during keyboard lessons, two Clefs exist. The Treble Clef represents “high,” notes while the Base Clef represents “low” notes. Here are some ways to remember the (horizontal) lines and spaces for both Treble and Base clefs.

* Base Clef lines: Great Big Ducks Fly Away
