Learn to Play Piano Using the Right Pedal

Before you learn to play piano, do you really need to know how to distinguish the “una corda” from the “sostenuto”? In short, the answer is: yes and no. While you do not need to know how every single piece of the piano functions, it is important to have a general knowledge about the different parts of the piano. Though infrequently used, the pedals of a piano are invaluable parts. You should become familiar with them before you learn to play piano.

If you look towards the bottom of a piano, you will see two or three pedals. If the piano has two pedals, then the pedal on the left is the “Una Corda” pedal, while the pedal on the right is the “Sustain” pedal. Una Corda Pedal. The first pedal that is standard on pianos is the Una Corda Pedal. When you learn to play piano keep in mind that this pedal is on the left side, and you should use your left foot to play the pedal.

When you learn to play piano, it is important to know that this pedal improves softness. The Una Corda pedal alters the timbre of the piano`s notes, which is the quality of their sound. Sostenuto Pedal. When pianos include three pedals, this is the middle pedal. Whether your piano has or lacks this pedal, it is important when you learn to play piano. Since you probably have two feet rather than three, you should use your right foot to depress the Sostenuto pedal.

The purpose of the sostenuto pedal is to sustain particular notes on the keyboard. After depressing this pedal while you learn to play piano, the pedal will stay sustained until you release the pedal when you see the words “Sost. Ped.” On sheet music, that is your cue to depress the pedal.

Sustain Pedal. Finally, there is the Sustain Pedal. This is the right pedal, which you should depress (you guessed it!) using your right foot. As you learn to play piano, use the Sustain Pedal to allow all of the piano`s notes to resound after you have lifted the keys. It creates a “legato” effect. On sheet music, “Ped.” is the Sustain pedal`s mark.
